Most but not all of the routers that switched to 5 GHz stayed above 166 Mbps, while the top three kept a 200 Mbps throughput measurement. One nice thing to report is that all of our competitors were able to download at 25 Mbps or better at long range. According to Netflix, 25 Mbps is the minimum comfortable throughput threshold for 4K video. The Archer A7 has a 750 MHz single-core Qualcomm processor and 128 MB of RAM, which fall pretty far short of the quad-core processor and 512 MB of RAM in the Archer A20, but its performance in our tests certainly showed that it is a capable router. Because we were testing in the real world, external variables affected our results, just as they're likely to affect yours. The purpose of our testing was not to choose a router that was slightly faster than another; it was to see which routers could deliver consistently strong performance without major issues in real-world conditions.
Use the shortest Ethernet cable that will work in your application, and stick with CAT 6 or CAT 7. If you like to stream movies in 4K, play video games, or just download large files, then the speed of your router is key. When you look at most modern routers, you’ll typically see a label like AC1700, AC3000, or AX6000.

Just like any other electronic device, even the best wireless routers can fail over time, especially if you’re putting more stress on them by adding more devices and spending more time streaming and downloading large files. The most common cause of router failures is excessive heat, since many folks tuck their router away in a corner or a closet and don’t pay much attention to it. To keep your router in good condition, be sure to put it in a cool and well-ventilated area and clean it once in a while to prevent dust from building up around the cooling vents. Keeping your kids safe from the darker corners of the internet can be a challenge, but fortunately, there are routers like Synology’s RT2600ac to give you a helping hand. The RT2600ac protects your kids from online threats right at the perimeter of your home network, so you don’t need to worry about installing parental control apps on each of their devices. Netgear’s Orbi offers a much more living room friendly aesthetic than most wireless routers, and it’s actually a pretty big departure from Netgear’s usual design.
The Synology RT2600ac is a bit pricier than our pick, and it finished our performance tests in a dead heat with the Asus Blue Cave and Asus RT-AC86U for second place. It has a dual-core processor, rather than a quad-core, and it lacks a third wireless radio, which means it may reach its limits earlier than the Archer A20. If you have a busy network with numerous clients vying for bandwidth, a tri-band router is the way to go. They use three radios—one that operates at 2.4GHz and two that operate at 5GHz, for load balancing.
Best Advanced Router: Asus RT-AC3200
Routers that support MU-MIMO are widely available, but the fact that consumers have been slow to understand exactly what the benefits of MU-MIMO are has kept the number of client devices somewhat scarce. You don’t get many extra features with the Reyee RG-E5, but for around $150 you get the latest Wi-Fi 6 technologies, solid throughput performance, and wide Wi-Fi signal coverage. The RG-E5 is easy to install and manage and gets you into a Wi-Fi 6 network without spending a bundle. If you require multi-gig ports and parental control software, be prepared to spend significantly more money for a router like the TP-Link Archer AX11000. Linksys's EA9300 Max-Stream is one of the fastest 802.11ac routers commercially available with a max speed of up to 4,000Mbps.
To make it easy, we’ll only talk about the things that really matter when buying a wireless router this 2019. In fact, you can’t even mount this on a wall like most of the routers featured above. Also, this doesn’t have a really sturdy stand so I suggest you place this in a secured and balanced area. Out of the box, theNetGear R9000 Nighthawk X10 AD7200features a really aggressive design. But the 4 antennas aren’t just for show because it also features the 60GHz band on top of the 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz bands.
The best WiFi router
Unfortunately, the Wi-Fi performance from the Almond+ was mediocre at best and particularly underwhelming at long range. The MR1900 will be discontinued soon, while the latter two routers lack band steering and are both more expensive than the TP-Link Archer A7. The Asus Blue Cave showed promise because of its design, AiMesh compatibility, and good reviews. It performed just as well as the Netgear R7000P and TP-Link Archer A7, landing in the middle of the pack, but it didn't distinguish itself beyond its easy-to-live-with exterior and middling price. D-Link released a set of 802.11ac Exo-branded routers and Wi-Fi mesh extenders at the CES 2019 trade show.
If you’re looking for a router that can offer you the peace of knowing that your home network is safe against malware and other online threats, then Asus RT-AX88U has you covered. It’s a high-performance router with a wealth of advanced features, from online security and parental controls to the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology, plus enough range and power to cover a large and busy home. Nearly all routers include separate radios for those bands, which lets you connect to whichever band is best. Some routers will automatically steer your connection between the multiple bands available, but you can usually turn that off as well, making each band its own, separate Wi-Fi network.

Even if you don’t have a lot of Wi-Fi 6 devices in your home yet, this router will make sure you’re ready when they do come along, and in the meantime it will deliver impressive performance for all your 802.11ac Wi-Fi 5 devices. Don’t let its appearance fool you, though, as this powerful Wi-Fi system can easily cover even the largest and busiest homes with more than enough performance for all of your streaming and video calling needs. A dedicated wireless channel runs between the main Orbi router and the satellite units to keep everything running quickly and smoothly, which means you’ll get consistent speeds, no matter which unit you’re closest to. If you've already got a budget router running your network and you're ready to upgrade to something more powerful, the Linksys Hydra Pro 6 belongs high on your list. With a dual-band, AX5400 build, full support for Wi-Fi 6, and 160MHz channel support for moving data more efficiently, it was an excellent performer in my speed tests, even managing to outperform flashier picks like the also great Asus RT-AX86U.
The DIR-2680 has internal antennas, which make it look less like a robot, and it includes McAfee-branded Internet security, but ultimately it trailed the other models here on our tests. (Use your router's mixed-mode setting—AES and TKIP—only if you have older devices that don't support WPA2.) WPA3 is a newer security standard that purports to be more secure, but very few WPA3-compatible routers and devices are available so far. However, since it uses the same wireless radios as every other device on your network, it's not as adaptable as a mesh-networking kit that lets you use either wired backhaul or dedicated wireless radios. We're planning on testing TP-Link's OneMesh alongside dedicated mesh-networking kits in our next update.
In general, the 5GHz band is going to be your best bet for a reliable, high-speed connection at close and medium range, while the 2.4GHz band is great for devices at the far reaches of your Wi-Fi network, where the improved range is worth the speed tradeoff. You need to be connected to your modem in order to send and receive data from the web -- your router lets you do that without need for a wire. It's basically a big, fancy antenna for your modem that lets you connect with it wirelessly, over Wi-Fi. You can also use that local Wi-Fi network to connect with other devices at home, like printers or remote storage servers. Gaming routers promise high performance and low latency for die-hard gamers, and it isn't uncommon to find them selling for $300 or even $400.
Specifically, you can filter which websites the device can only have access to or block inappropriate websites and even pause WiFi access real-time. To top it all off, this AC1900 router has an AiProtection Network Security feature, parental controls to restrict websites, and QoS to give gaming and 4K streaming the strongest and most reliable connection. Compatibility with your wireless devices is key, because there’s no point in owning a wireless router if your devices can’t connect. In that same vein, speed is important, but only if your internet connection can handle it. Range is also important, but the degree of its importance is directly related to the size and configuration of your home.
If you want a fast router but aren't ready to upgrade to the new 802.11ax standard, this is one of the best options you have. The router is capable of transmitting on three bands simultaneously with advanced beamforming technology. Linksys equipped it with a quad-core 1.8GHz processor to process the traffic and help keep this router running at top speed even when under heavy load. In addition to being more stylized and decorative than your average wireless router, Asus's Blue Cave AC2600 offers excellent performance with a top data transmission speed of 2,600Mbps. Similar to TP-Link's routers, this one can also be conveniently controlled via a smartphone app, and it has built-in antivirus and security features powered by Trend Micro to help keep your data safe. Razer has developed one of the fastest routers on the market, the Razer Sila, able to cover up to 9,000 square feet when deployed as a mesh network.
It was faster than anything else we tested at both close and long range, it's reliable, and it shrugs off the stress of handling multiple wireless devices simultaneously. The three-piece Eero 6 Plus is ideal for use in larger homes of up to 4,500 square feet. It uses low-profile nodes that are designed to blend in with any home décor while providing a strong Wi-Fi 6 signal to every corner of your house. In addition to eliminating dead zones, the Eero 6 Plus doubles as a home-automation hub that uses a Zigbee radio to control smart devices such as cameras, locks, lighting, and thermostats.
If you have a very fast internet connection and think you'll be able to upgrade to an even faster connection sooner than later, we say, grab the CAX80. This is also a great gaming router as the on-board Ethernet, which lets you hook up your Xbox or Playstation via a cable rather than Wi-Fi, is much faster than the Ethernet you're probably used to. You have to check off a lot of boxes to get the most from this modem/router, but if that's you, you just met your future connection to the internet. Wireless router technology might seem dry and complicated, or even difficult to understand, but you can make an informed decision if you’re able to wrap your head around a few key concepts. For example, you need to select a wireless router that supports the standards required by your wireless devices, and it’s important to understand the difference between the two main wireless router frequencies.
A value of 1,000 ms at 50 percent means that half of all requests had one second or less of latency. As you can see, the Archer A20 remained far under the 750 ms threshold throughout our test sequence, just breaking the line only at the 100th percentile. You likely wouldn't perceive any browsing slowdowns, even while the other clients were hammering the router with streaming, downloading, and other browsing requests.
